Interactive Writing on the Duolingo English Test consists of two connected parts based on a single theme: Part A ( Initial Writing ) gives you 5 minutes to write an initial response (about 120 words) to a broad prompt, and Part B ( Follow-up Writing ) gives you 3 minutes to answer a follow-up question (about 80 words) zooming into a specific detail.

Interactive Listening


interactive Listening in the current Duolingo English Test has 3 question types
1. Listen and Complete ( You hear a scenario and answer 3–4 fill-in-the-blank questions. You can replay the scenario audio as many times as you want. You may also paraphrase rather than reproduce the exact words you heard. )

2. Listen and Respond ( You participate in a simulated conversation. You listen to the other speaker and select the most appropriate response. There are generally 5–6 Listen and Respond questions after the initial Listen and Complete questions )

3. Summarize the Conversation ( After the conversation, you write a summary of what happened. You have 75 seconds (1:15) for this task. Duolingo recommends writing a complete paragraph covering who was speaking, what they discussed, and the outcome )

There are two Interactive Listening conversations on the test.

The combined time for Listen and Complete + Listen and Respond is 6 minutes 30 seconds per conversation,
followed by the 75-second summary.
